April 29th Bay Area Mobilization Planning meeting 2/11

On the afternoon of February 11th there will be a meeting of all social justice movement organizations working to achieve progressive solutions to address the Trump administration. At the February 11th meeting a decision will be made whether to organize an April 29th event, what kind of event, & its location. To be successful it is vital that the forces that come together to plan this action reflect the diverse constellation of organizations working to counter the Trump agenda.

BACKGROUND: The coalition of organizations that sponsored the hugely successful 2014 People’s Climate March in NYC has issued a call for a campaign that begins with the inauguration and concludes on April 29 with a mass demonstration in Washington, DC. In the intervening 100 days, the emphasis will be on local actions on the whole range of issues affected by the Trump agenda. Briefly this is their plan:

We need to stand up and take action to protect everything and everyone we love, in the first 100 hours of Trump’s administration, in the first 100 days, and beyond. Pledge to be a part of the resistance. There is no denying it: Donald Trump’s election is a threat to the future of our planet, the safety of our communities, and the health of our families. If the policies he proposed on the campaign trail are implemented, they will destroy our climate, decimate our jobs and livelihoods, and undermine the civil rights and liberties won in many hard fought battles. It’s up to us to stop that from happening before it starts.

During the first 100 hours, the People’s Climate Movement is calling for hundreds of actions around the country. In every corner of the nation, we will be in the offices, meetings rooms, and the halls of power to fight back. We will not allow climate deniers to threaten the planet. We will not allow attacks on immigrants, communities of color, women, LGBTQ and workers to become the new normal.

Just before the 100th day of his administration, on Saturday, April 29th, we will come together for one massive march to bring our demands to the streets of Washington, D.C. While their emphasis is getting the largest possible turnout in the Capitol on April 29th, it is unlikely that very many people from the West Coast will be able to get to DC. But that does not mean we couldn’t organize a parallel event of our own in the Bay Area on that date. To have real impact, such a local event must be large and reflect the interests of all the constituencies impacted by the Trump agenda – the environment, racism and Islamophobia, sexism, homophobia, immigrant and Native American rights, jobs and workers rights, housing, food security, healthcare, education, peace and military spending, police violence and civil liberties, and other urgent social needs.
