Fossil Fuel Resistance

"Digging stuff up and lighting it on fire is the energy of the past."

                                ~Bill McKibben, Daily Kos, 5/11/15

Fossil Fuel Resistance works for a rapid and just transition away from all fossil fuel infrastructure. We have the technology and natural resources we need to switch to clean energy now. The only obstacle is the industry that is profiting from the energy of the past. Fossil Fuel Resistance fights the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure by working against the drilling, transporting, refining, and exporting of fossil fuels.

Coal

After a 2-year struggle, the Oakland City Council passed an ordinance banning coal in Oakland! Now developer Phil Tagami is suing the city of Oakland over the coal ban. No Coal in Oakland is organizing to support the city in beating the lawsuit. Please join us in supporting No Coal in Oakland.

Refinery Corridor

  • Benicians for a Safe & Healthy Community defeated Big Oil! The Benicia City Council voted unanimously to deny Valero's application to build a crude-by-rail terminal. They may need to defend this victory in September 2017.
  • The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors voted to deny Phillips 66 permit for a crude-by-rail terminal in SLO which would have sent dirty crude to the Bay Area. This is probably the nail in the coffin, but we're still watching to see if they try to appeal.

Stop Fracking

The Livermore Aquifer is threatened by run-off from fracking. We're joining with Food & Water Watch & others to defeat the loopholes allowing drinking water to be polluted with fracking run-off.

Air District Stationary Source Committee

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is charged with protecting air quality for the nine-county Bay Area. So far, they have green-lit fossil fuel expansion projects. Area residents and community organizations worked to get the board to pass a resolution in the fall of 2014 calling for a 20% reduction in Bay Area refinery emissions. Now we are working in coalition with other community groups to pass first-of-their kind refinery rules to put numeric caps on emissions.
